The Vicious Cycle
全手工製的黑金配色Vicious Cycle看起來真的好高貴，加上存手繪製的LOGO太別有直感喲~
10 reproductions of Spider Murphy’s 1975 white Pipeline Gun, reinterpreted by 10 artists in the Dutch style of Delftware. A series of bodysurfing handplanes in a limited palette of colours. A Factory Rally Kit-equipped 1968 Porsche 912 reupholstered with premium class South African tan leather hide. It reads like a gift list for the man who has everything, which is exactly what South Africa’s Dutchmann is offering. And if the man who has everything didn’t already have a handmade copper-plated track frame? Well, Christmas is sorted.
Gavin Rooke is curating a connoisseur’s collection of boy’s toys that should cater for all weekend pursuits, from big wave surfing to carousing around curvy backroads in a performance-spec’d Porsche. No gent’s garage is complete without a bicycle, however, and those chunky, logo-covered, carbon-fiber pop-out frames won’t cut the mustard. Enter Dutchmann, who brought Duncan MacIntyre, South Africa’s most accomplished frame builder, out of retirement to collaborate with composite specialist Anton Dekker on The Vicious Cycle.
MacIntyre had been building frames since the 70s for various local marques and his own, ‘Gemini’, before The Vicious Cycle project lured him back to the torch. The limited run of 10 frames were hand-brazed from Reynolds 653, stripped, coppered and lacquered in black before being built up with a custom set of tri-spoke composite wheels by Anton Dekker and Exclusive Conversion — who usually manufacture bespoke items for Porsches, Lamborghini and Ferraris. Even the logo was considered: hand drawn by Gustav Greffrath, a Johannesburg Creative Director and Designer.

No. 22 Little Wing

Jimi Hendrix would have turned 71 on November 27th this year, had he not been admitted as an honorary member of the 27 Club. He wrote ‘Little Wing’ in 1967, included on the Jimi Hendrix Experience Axis: Bold as Love album — a sonic exploration based on Jimi recording his guitar through the Leslie speaker of an organ. Canada’s No. 22 Bicycle Company have just released a pista version of their titanium road frame and named it Little Wing, perhaps as a nod to the emotion behind Jimi’s lyrics: “When I’m sad she comes to me, with a thousand smiles she gives to me free”.
No. 22 was born from a mission to offer an affordable ti frame with impeccable design and manufacturing — they’re made from American-sourced 3Al-2.5V titanium tubing and assembled in the US. Both Little Wing and its road-faring version, the Great Divide, share the same exemplary manufacturing but this pista is built up with a set of custom drilled Phil Wood hubs, laced up to a set of Wheels of Mass Destruction carbon rims. That’s a custom carbon fork to suit Little Wing’s geometry and it’s topped with matte black Enve carbon stem and 3T Scatto carbon bars.

BRIDGESTONE SPRINT
這台美國製造的碳纖BRIDGESTONE，白金配色看起來是不是很兇猛啊!
Track racing, to coin a phrase, is big in Japan, and while Keirin racing requires classically styled steel frames by revered masters of the torch, there are numerous brands that cater for the velodrome who specialize in modern carbon fiber weaponry. One such manufacturer is Bridgestone, and this particular model, a PHM9, has been built up by KGS Bikes in Texas.
Kevin Saunders, the man behind KGS Bikes, has an exacting eye for quality and craftsmanship, and has thus established KGS Bikes as a leader in the American premium bicycle marketplace. TheirParlee Z1 ‘Lion Rampant’ left us speechless last year, and this Bridgestone is also a fine example of his passion; specifying Mavic Comete and IO rims, a Sugino Zen crankset and ring, Nitto bar and post and a Kashimax Five Gold saddle. A truly lust-worthy ride, but please note the cautionary decal on the front wheel.

Depending on the event and the velodrome, track cycling can in many ways be a photographer's dream scenario. With various angles available, they can use any lens from an ultra-wide fisheye, to a 400mm and still capture the action. As well as this, they can use slave flashes to great effect (in Beijing, for example, flashes were not permitted). The impressive Ace Hotel London has been opening in stages over late Summer/early Fall, working hard to get everything spot-on. With all in its right place, we decided to take a tour of the group’s first European location which has take a formerly grey, generic business hotel site and turned it into a destination for anyone those looking for a bit of style with their stay as well as a place for locals to meet-up and shoot the breeze.

London-based architecture and interior design firm Universal Design Studio took the lead inside and out with Ace Hotel, the façade using a rather interesting dark ’engineering brick’ grid pattern with a heavy feel. Inside you’ll find the heart of all Ace properties, the lobby. As well as the reception and a well-stocked collaboration goods store, locally-sourced materials, including a cork ceiling fitted with copper light fixtures and timber parquet flooring have been used throughout, not to mention a sweet selection of Ercol seating and a work desk for getting on with business. Coffee of course makes an appearance via Bulldog Editions featuring Square Mile Roasters and much cake.
Most important however, the rooms. Ace describe them as “a friend’s Shoreditch apartment, a collection of furniture and objects acquired over time, each with stories and memories attached.” Inside, pieces from local makers including maps and sketch pads, as well as Revo radios, Rega RP1 turntables, Farmers’ bath products, quilts by A.P.C. and leather trays from Ally Capellino, and, to annoy your neighbours, beautiful guitars from C. F. Martin & Co.
Once you’ve had a good nights sleep restaurant Hoi Polloi from the Bistroteque crew serves from breakfast to late night ‘supper’, treats come courtesy of Lovage “a seasonal farm-to-street elixir stand” offering sorbets and granitas, there’s a basement bar and lobby DJs for booze and music and even somewhere to stock-up on flowers with ‘That Flower Shop’, founded by Hattie Fox. So, basically, you’re going to have to find a pretty good reason to leave your hotel at all. Ace on form as always, a credit to founder Alex Calderwood who sadly passed away this week.
